YEAR RECEPTION (YR) Summer Term

 Flower Power and Animal Magic

Our main topics: The Life Cycle of a Sunflower, The Life Cycle of a Caterpillar, Farms and baby animals, transition into Year 1
 

YR - Personal Social and Emotional Development

  • Look after our environment.
  • Beginning to understand our emotions.
  • Be good friends.
  • Be healthy.
  • Be happy about our move into Year 1

YR - Communications, Language and Literacy

  • Main texts – The Sunflower, The Sunflower House, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Cow.
  • Ask questions about why things happen and give explanations, listen attentively to others views.
  • Know and show an understanding that information can be found from a variety of different sources.
  • Sequence and write instructions.
  • Write super sentences using interesting words and punctuation.
  • Re-tell a simple story by choosing to act it out, freeze frame the main events, use puppets and storyboards.
  • Ongoing – Reading, writing, phonics, word recognition, spelling, handwriting, sentence construction, punctuation.

 YR - Mathmatical Development

  • Double numbers.
  • Name and describe 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Make symmetrical patterns.
  • To find all ways to make 5 using 2 numbers, all the ways to make 10 using 2 numbers (number doubles).
  • Sort and organise information (data handling).
  • To tell the time using o’clock.
  • Ongoing – addition and subtraction, counting, reading, ordering and recognising numbers, recognise and recreate patterns, count in 2s and 10s, find missing numbers.

YR - Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Understand and sequence the life cycle of a sunflower.
  • Plant a Sunflower seed and observe it grow.
  • Plant and observe a variety of seeds including sprouting seeds.
  • Look after and observe the life cycle of a caterpillar.
  • Find out about farms and cows. Floating and sinking.

YR - Physical Development

  • Create simple 3 step sequences using shapes, jumps and travelling (gymnastics).
  • Have an awareness of space and move with control and co-ordination.
  • Develop skills of sending and retrieving equipment by rolling, pushing, touching, kicking, catching and trapping.

YR - Creative Development

  • Use Van Gogh’s work to inspire our own paintings.
  • Make a clay cow.
  • Whole school project inspired by Renoir’s ‘Umbrellas’
  • Use a variety of media to draw, sketch and colour.
  • Weave and sew.

YR - Information, Communications Technology

  • Operate simple equipment.

  • Navigate our way around a computer programme.

 YR - Cultures and Beliefs

  • About the story of Noah’s Ark.
  • Show care and concern for others, the environment and living things.

YEAR 1 (Y1) Summer Term - First Half Term

Small seeds and Wondrous Worlds

Y1 - Personal Social and Emotional Development

  • Caring for our environment.
  • Issues such as right and wrong from the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.
  • School council issues.
     

Y1 - Communication, Language and Literacy 

  • Main texts: My Bean Diary, Jack and the Beanstalk.
  • We will be: Writing non-fiction bean diaries, retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and writing up our cress investigations.
  • Ongoing work throughout the term will include Phonics, word recognition, spelling, grammatical awareness, handwriting, sentence construction, punctuation and vocabulary extension.
 

Y1 - Mathmatical Development

  • Numbers and the number system, place value and ordering, addition, subtraction, positional language and problem solving.

Y1 - Knowledge and understanding of the world

  • Science: Planting beans and other seeds, making careful observations of their growth, naming parts of plants and investigating what plants need to grow healthily.
  • ICT: Using Colour Magic to design story front covers and using keyboard skills to add a title and author name.

Y1 - Physical Development

  • Games: Sending and receiving with bats and balls and developing football skills.

Y1 - Creative Development

  • Art: Using chalk pastel skills to create portraits of Jack and the Giant.
  • Music: Exploring how to use pitch descriptively to compose Giant chants.

YEAR 1 (Y1) Summer Term - Second Half Term

Y1 - Personal, social and emotional development

  • Healthy food and exercise.
  • Transition to Year Two.

Y1 - Communication, Language and Literacy 

  • Main texts to be used: The Great Green Forest.
  • We will be: Creating non-fiction fact files about rainforest animals.
  • Ongoing work throughout the term will include Phonics, word recognition, spelling, grammatical awareness, handwriting, sentence construction, punctuation and vocabulary extension.

Y1 - Mathmatical Development

  • Doubling, simple division as grouping and sharing and measuring.

 

Y1 - Knowledge and understanding of the world

  • Science: Investigating materials and waterproofing, investigating the habitats and features of different rainforest animals (Zoolab visit). 
  • Geography: Comparing rainforest and local environments (visit to Wakehurst Place). 
  • DT: Designing and making a new rainforest creature.I
  • ICT: Programming a programmable toy (Bee Bots) to follow a route.

Y1 - Physical Development

  • Athletics: Preparing races for Sports Day.

Y1 - Creative Development

  • Art: Creating fact file backgrounds using different paint techniques and equipment. 
  • Music: Reviewing previous learning about different instruments, beat, rhythm and pitch. 
  • Whole school project: Exploring ‘Umbrellas’ and other work by Renoir.

YEAR 2 (Y2) Summer Term - First Half Term

Topic - Out of an Egg

  • Respect for living things and the environment.
  • Friendships.
  • Moving on (to new class etc)Healthy Lifestyles.

Y2 - Communication, Language and Literacy 

  • Key texts: Egg (story writing), the Magic Bicycle (recount writing), Mrs Armitage on Wheels. Non-fiction associated with history
  • This Is Me Now – write letters to new teachers.
  • Ongoing throughout the term, including:
    Phonics, spelling, word recognition, handwriting, , sentence construction, punctuation, grammatical awareness, reading comprehension, writing composition.

Y2 - Mathmatical Development

  • Ongoing throughout the term including:
