Year 1 Weekly Blurb

Topic

After studying the amazing rainforest creatures during our visit from Zoo Lab,

we will be designing, making and evaluating our own fantasy rainforest creatures!

 

We will need LOTS of junk modelling materials so would be most grateful if you could contribute items including:

cardboard boxes, egg boxes, cardboard rolls (not toilet rolls), plastic containers, yoghurt pots, pipe cleaners, pom-poms (for craft work, not cheerleading!), corks, lids, pasta, fabric, collage materials, wobbly eyes!!!

 

Please help……we can’t make the models without the resources!

 

Maths

This week we will continue to solve some fun problems using our length measuring skills.

 

Reminders of things to try at home:

Use non standard measures to estimate and measure distances and objects.

e.g. How many shoe lengths is it from the front door to the stairs?

How many pens do you need to match the length of the table?

If you have a ruler or tape measure, you could try measuring things more accurately.

 

P.S.H.E

We will be celebrating the year we have shared, thinking about our favourite moments.

 

REPORTS

You will have received your child’s annual report on Friday 3rd July. Please share this with your child and work together to complete the comment slips.

Topic

This week we will be having lots of creative fun!

We will choose our favourite rainforest creature and sketch it using simple step by step instructions and simple shapes, building up the detail as we go.

We will then paint our animals using small brushes and bold rainforest colours.

We will investigate different brush strokes in order to create different textures.

 

Maths

Our Sports day begins at 1.30 on Friday 3rd July. Please come and support us!

Thank you for providing your children with plimsolls. Please double check that they fit,

as we are having quite a few squeezed toes or plimsolls flying off!!!

Rainforests

We are very pleased to welcome Zoo Lab on Monday morning.

Our visitor will bring a wonderful selection of creatures associated with the rainforest for our children to see.

 

All of the creatures are safe and are very used to being around children!

The children are invited to touch some of the creatures if they would like to, however, nobody has to! 

We will all be required to wash our hands after the visit to comply with hygiene standards.

 

Topic

This week we continue to explore our new topic ‘rainforests’.  We will continue using non-fiction books and the internet to find the answers to our questions.  We will also be displaying the information we find in Rainforest Fact files.  We will be using pictures, captions and labels.

 

Maths

We will investigate sharing numbers.

We will solve word and picture problems such as…..

There were 2 trees and 6 monkeys altogether. 

How many monkeys were in each tree?

We will solve the problems by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. 

We will also use apparatus and create our own jottings to help us.

           

Ideas to try at home

Sharing out toys, household objects and food at mealtimes.

When you are dishing up meals, count out the number of potatoes, vegetables or fruit that each person gets.

   

Count in 2s to help you share things out quicker!

 

PE   

We will begin to practise for Sports’ Day.

We will develop our sprinting skills and practise running in a straight line!

We will work as a class to devise a team race and begin to practise it.

 

National Smile Month

We will be singing the praises of fruit!

We will think about how they help our bodies grow healthy and strong.

Please encourage children to select and include fruit in lunch boxes.

We will be looking out for this and praising children who are setting a great example!

 

On Friday we will taste some different fruit, ask the children what they tried and liked,

so you can stock up supplies for lunch boxes! (Please let us know of any allergies)

 

Please sign up if you are able to provide fruit for our taster day on Friday.

There is also a space to sign if you are able to spare a few minutes to help us prepare the fruit

first thing on Friday morning.

Rainforests

Topic

 

We are looking forward to our trip to Wakehurst on Monday. It will be a good way to start our topic on rainforests. Before we go we will be talking to the children about what they already know about plants and they will ask questions about what they would like to find out during the trip. We will also be explaining the different activities that they will have the chance to do during the trip. Fingers crossed for good weather!!!

This week we start to explore our new topic ‘rainforests’.  We will use information books and the internet to find the answers to our questions.  We will also be displaying the information we find in Rainforest Fact files.  We will be using pictures, captions and labels.

‘Umbrellas’ by Renoir

 

 

Topic

We will continue our work based on “Les Parapluies” by Renoir. We will look at the painting in detail, discussing all the different shades of blue that we can see. We will be developing our skills as artists by creating our own shades of blue through colour mixing.

                                                                                                    

We will be learning more about France and some more French words! ‘Bonjour!’ We will put on our historian hats when we research the people who lived at the time the painting was set.

On Thursday we will be dressing up for our whole school French day. Children can dress up in red, white and blue or as French people. We will also be filling our own tasty baguette for our lunch!

 

This week we will also carry out a waterproof investigation to discover which types of material would make the best umbrella. At home you could talk to your children about what materials would be waterproof and then maybe even sort some for yourselves!

 

Maths

We will use tallying to record our favourite fillings for our tasty baguettes.

We will use our data handling skills to interpret the results.

 

PE   

We will continue to develop our football skills.

This week, we will focus on working with a partner to pass and stop the ball.

 

National Smile Month

This week we will be singing the praises of carbohydrates!

We will be thinking about food that gives us energy and looking for good sources of energy in the children’s lunchboxes. Maybe you could put different things next week’s lunchboxes: e.g. pitta bread, bagel, wholemeal bread, pasta, rice, potato salad?

 

Please remember to return your slip for our Wakehurst trip as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday 10th June.

We hope that you have had a wonderful half term holiday!

 

‘Umbrellas’ by Renoir

 

 

 

 

 


Topic

Over the next fortnight we will be undertaking a whole school project based on “Les Parapluies”, a painting by Renoir. We will look at the painting in detail, discussing it as a class and asking questions to plan our learning. We will research Renoir and find out a little about this famous French artist. We will look carefully at the people in the painting and will freeze frame part of the scene in order to understand more about them. We will then think about what the people might be saying and thinking, and will create speech and thought bubbles.

 

Over the two weeks the painting will also lead us towards learning about France. We hope to learn lots about this country and maybe even some French words! ‘Bonjour!’ We will be developing our skills as artists ourselves and will put on our historian hats when we research the people who lived at the time.

 

Maths

We will investigate number doubles.

We will use pictures, jottings and number lines to help us learn and recall number facts.

               

1+1=      2+2=      3+3=     4+4=      5+5=

 


Ideas to try at home

Draw some dots on a page and use a mirror to double the number

(The dots could be on half a lady bird or butterfly)

 

Roll two dice, when you get a double, find the total.

 

PE

We will start to learn and practise football skills.

This week the children will learn how to control the ball with their feet and to dribble it along a course.

If the weather is nice we will be going outside so please make sure your child has plimsolls that fit them!

         Topic

This week we will be continuing our science investigation about how plants grow best.  The children will have the opportunity to find out how well their cress has grown in the different conditions and to draw conclusions.  We will discuss whether what happened was what they had expected.

 

Maths

          This week we are learning how to problem solve with numbers.  We will be learning how to work systematically to ensure we find all the solutions.  We will also be learning about what even and odd numbers are, and will try to spot them around the unit!

 

PE   

We will continue to develop our bat and ball skills.

We will be bouncing a ball on a bat and keeping score to try and beat our personal bests.

We will then be trying to pass and receive a ball with a partner.  Perhaps you could practise this in the garden over half term- weather permitting!!!!!

If the weather is nice we will be going outside- DON’T FORGET YOUR PLIMSOLLS PLEASE!!!

 

          National Smile Month

 

 

This week we will be thinking about tooth kind food and looking for tooth kind food and drinks in the children’s lunchboxes. We will also be discussing what types of food and drinks are good for our teeth and the importance of having healthy teeth and how to look after them. PLEASE CAN ALL CHILDREN BRING IN THEIR TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE ON FRIDAY 22nd MAY so that we can all practise cleaning our teeth.

 

Important Dates

We will be visiting Wakehurst Place on Monday 15th June.  A letter will be sent home soon with all the necessary information.  We will need parent help and will put a ‘signing up board’ out soon, so please keep your diaries free!

DON’T FORGET! There is a staff INSET day on Monday 1st June. The children come back to school on Tuesday 2nd June.

 

A  HUGE thank you to all the parents who have brought in donations, we couldn’t do it without you!  We hope you all have a lovely half term!!
