In Key Stage 1, children study within the National Curriculum

The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject.

We do not follow a commercial Phonics scheme. We follow the teaching sequence recommended in Letters and Sounds.  It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

Further details can be found at:

We do not follow a commercial reading scheme. We use a mixture of phonically decodeable and real books. This aims to develop children's understanding of different genres so that they learn how stories and poems are stuctured and how to use non-fiction texts. We also promote reading through our Home Reading "Journey to Pluto" challenge. This encourages parents and children to read books at home and record children's comments in their Reading Diary.
